Another Fortress purchased with War Bonds that probably never actually existed beyond the photograph provided by the War Dept.
Residents of Hertford and Perquimans County in North Carolina raised sufficient funds in their 2nd Bond Drive in April 1943 to buy another Fortress. Unfortunately, the photo looks sadly familiar and was used on other occasions to show bond holders their "purchase". As the pace of the war heated up there simply wasn't the time to delay new aircraft with dedication ceremonies. Flying Fortresses were rushed directly from the factory to the war fronts in Europe with the minimum of delay to replace the heavy losses at that time.
