This familiar photograph suggests that the B17 Fortress named as "Moore County NC" probably never actually existed beyond the retouched image sent to the local newspapers by the War Dept.
Citizens of Moore County, North Carolina over purchased bonds during the 2nd War Loan Drive to the extent of 160%, achieving sales of $453,660 during April 1943. Sad that such commitment only provided a photograph rather than an actual named airplane but it did provide the funds to put another Fortress into the skies.
