A C47 Skytrain christened by Vivian Leigh with the words "May this ship continue with her wonderful of bringing back sons to their mother." The plane was named for the winner of a competition to find the "woman best-typifying the character of American mothers". The name was chosen by the son of the 75-year Mrs Carnes, Cpl Sol Carnes, one of four brothers serving in the US military.
The C47 was reputed to have completed 3000 hours of flying and carried its share of the 50,000 casualties out of Normandy.
