Flyin Lion

Lyons High School in La Grange, Illinois raised a total of $85,000 in War Bond sales in January 1944 to purchase this Mustang. It was used for publicity on a number of Bond drive purchases and renamed accordingly as "Spirit of Elks", "Wichita Falls" and "Ellwood Avenger" to name but a few.

Delivered to the USAAF on 19th April 44 it was sent to 341st AAF Base Unit at Clearwater and then on to Venice AAB in Florida. It was later repaired after a taxi accident with a Mustang which carried the previous serial number (42-103643) and was ultimately scrapped at MacDill AAB in May 1946.

My thanks for the above information provided by Martin Kyburz and Jeff Joyce.
