Sgt George M BLACKWELL

345th Bomb Group, 501st Bomb Squadron


George Blackwell was born in Missouri but enlisted at Lubbock, Texas, on 8th July 1943. He is believed to have been a saleman pre-war but proved to be a talented artist when assigned to the 501st Bomb Squadron's Intelligence Group.

Aided by Cpl Joseph Merenda, the squadron painter who did the lettering work, Blackwell executed some superb nose arts on the Mitchell's assigned to the 501st.
